Are You Eligible for SSDI?

Social Security Disability is a government program pays monthly benefits to you if you become disabled and are unable to work. In order to be eligible for Social Security Disability, you are required to have previously worked in a job where you paid Social Security taxes. The Social Security Administration uses a system of credits, based on your earnings and your work history, to determine whether you are eligible.  Not all jobs count towards Social Security eligibility. But if you are self-employed or in the military, you are likely still eligible for benefits.

You May Apply for SSI

If you become disabled and unable to work, and you have not worked long enough for SSDI benefits, you may apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) instead. SSI is a program available to those who have not worked before or have not worked long enough to receive SSDI. Your eligibility is based on income and asset limits. SSI is an option for individuals who have worked and were previously eligible to receive SSDI, but whose SSDI coverage has lapsed as a result of not working for a long period of time.
